Bettina Banoun became a partner in Wiersholm in 2004, after working as a corporate lawyer for Telenor, earning her PhD at the University of Oslo and as a lawyer at another law firm. She chose Wiersholm because of its professional environment and firm culture.
"Since I work a lot with tax law it’s a big advantage to work for a firm with the strong focus on taxes and expertise that Wiersholm has. The complexity of the field makes it nearly impossible to stay updated by yourself,” she says. Furthermore, it was important to her to be in a firm that also has a strong tradition of litigation.
”I have had the pleasure of working on a number of exciting cases before the Supreme Court and lower courts, as well as before the EFTA Court. In addition to pure tax cases, it’s been fun to argue cases on EEA law, the Constitution, human rights and a number of civil law disciplines. I enjoy being able to explore the depth and width of cases.” It has also been important that Wiersholm has made it possible for her to do some law policy work and research.
“As head of the Bar Association’s Tax Law Committee, I am involved in drafting consultative statements on laws and we attempt to illuminate issues relating to due process. The tax department at Wiersholm has written books on both tax treaties and EEA tax law along with authoring numerous articles and giving lectures and speeches. A relaxed and pleasant culture with few sharp elbows is also important. Even though the workload is big, I appreciate being able to work for a firm where it is possible to combine my career as a lawyer with having a family,” says the mother of three with a smile.
